About Weekend Explorer
Weekend Explorer helps people in Indian cities find a good weekend trip within a drive: an interactive map of places, trek guides that compare permits and operator prices, and birdwatching spots with directions and seasons. It is built and maintained by Aswin.
Where the information comes from
- Official sources first. Forest permits link to the Karnataka Aranya Vihaara portal and the Tamil Nadu Trek Tamil Nadu portal.
- Operator listings. Trek prices are the starting prices shown on public operator pages, with the date we saw them. We include an operator when we can find a public listing for that trek.
- Birding and travel sources. Bird lists, seasons and access notes come from birding-club notes, forest department pages, eBird and published articles. Species lists show birds regularly reported, not guarantees.
- Our own estimates, labelled. Do-it-yourself costs and fuel costs are rough estimates and are marked as such.
How accurate is it, and how do we say so?
Every page shows a "reviewed" date. Where sources disagree on a fee, timing or distance, the page says so and asks you to confirm at the gate or with the operator. Prices, fees and access rules change often, so treat the numbers as a starting point, not a quote.
